At Nathalia Secondary College, we deliver a comprehensive Careers Education program from Year 7 through to Year 12, supporting students to explore their interests, develop skills, and prepare for their future pathways.
Year 7 & 8
Students begin their careers journey by developing an understanding of their interests, strengths, and values. Through Careers lessons, they make links between their learning in the classroom and a wide range of career opportunities, including emerging jobs of the future. They will also start building their Career Portfolio and recording their goals and reflections in their Career Action Plan.
Year 9
Students will participate in the My Career Insights program, which includes the Morrisby online profile assessment. This helps students identify their personal strengths, learning preferences, and career interests. Careers activities at this level also focus on developing decision-making skills and exploring senior school subject choices, including VET options. Students are encouraged to continue developing their Career Action Plan and begin building a resume as part of their Career Portfolio.
Year 10
Year 10 is a key year for career development, with a strong focus on Work Experience. Students prepare for their placements by learning about workplace safety, understanding employer expectations, and practicing employability skills. They will complete at least one week of Work Experience, giving them valuable insight into the world of work and helping guide their future career decisions. Pathways planning sessions also support students in choosing their senior school program and exploring options such as VCE, VCE-VM, and VET courses. By the end of Year 10, students will have further developed their Career Portfolio, including an updated resume and Career Action Plan.
Year 11 & 12
Senior students receive individual Career Pathways interviews and tailored support to help plan their futures. This includes guidance on apprenticeships and traineeships, certificate and diploma courses at TAFE and other RTOs, as well as university pathways. Resume and cover letter writing, interview preparation, and employability skills are key focus areas to prepare students for both further study and the workforce. Opportunities such as Structured Workplace Learning and School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships can also be incorporated into a student’s senior school program. Work Experience remains available to all senior students. Students continue to update their Career Portfolio each year to ensure they are well-prepared for life after school.
